Diagnosed with gastritis…

At the end of last year, I was diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). I had been suffering with stomach pains and bloating on and off, and for ages I was undiagnosed.

I still eat the same, and at times will find the foods that trigger the IBS will effect me one time, and then not another. My diagnoses came back that I possibly have a flare up when experiencing stress!

Recently within the past week, I have been suffering with constant chronic pain in my stomach and lower back. The pain has been so unbearable at times I feel like I can’t move! My stomach is swollen and bloated constantly! Back off to the doctors I go, to be told I have gastritis! It is unknown if having IBS has helped to trigger this.

So unknown to me what gastritis is and how to treat it, I have done some research into it. I discovered it occurs when the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed after it’s been damaged. This could be from many different causes such as, bacteria, excessive use of painkillers or alcohol. I have no idea what has started mine as I don’t drink or hardly take painkillers. But it is there and it needs to be treated.

Your diet plays a big part in your recovery and it is important that certain foods are eliminated from your diet until you are fit and healthy. I have been prescribed a pill which I must take daily, which helps to line the stomach. This needs to be taken for a whole month.

Certain foods to avoid:

  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Tea
  • Spicy foods – chilli, curries
  • Black and red pepper
  • High fat foods – increases the acid in your stomach
  • High fat dairy products – except semi-skimmed milk
  • Tomatoes, onion or garlic
  • Tomato sauces, purées
  • Oranges, grapefruit, figs, berries
  • Dried fruit
  • Junk food
  • Fried food
  • Cured sausages
  • Butter
  • Soft drinks with extra sugar
  • Carbonated drinks – (no Dr Pepper for me)
  • Pineapple or citrus juice

Your probably thinking what on earth can I eat?! I have been trying for a week now to find the right foods.

  • Fish
  • Vegetables (especially green veg)
  • Salad
  • Chicken
  • Rice
  • Flavoured water with no sugar
  • Yoghurt – this is brilliant to level out the stomach acids. Best to have live or fat free
  • Honey
  • Bananas, peaches, kiwi, melon, grapes

Hopefully this helps some people, as I really struggled to find what I could and shouldn’t eat!

This is a brilliant post, only wish I’d had this post this time last year! Like you I’ve really suffered over the last 6 months, mainly with Acid Reflux and IBS – can definitely confirm that this is also my go to list for foods. Could you post any meal recipes? I sometimes struggle for meals so it’d be great to get some inspo 🙌🏼X
